Dean Arthur Dugoni of UOPs Arthur Dugoni School of Dentistry announced his retirement as Dean effective 30 June 2006. These past 26 years have truly been a labor of love filled with wonderful experiences and dedicated, caring, and generous individuals who have touched my life, made a difference, and contributed significantly to the dental schools successes and my growth as a person. Dean Dugoni will have a continuing relationship at the dental school in assisting the broader university in fund raising for the undergraduate science program on the main campus, as well as assisting the next dean on dental school objectives. University President Donald DeRosa stated that Arts talents and abilities will continue to enrich the education of the University of the Pacific students beyond his time as Dean. And we all will benefit from his continuing effort.
Dr. Dugoni is credited with raising $50.8 million towards the School of Dentistrys capital campaign, one of the largest in the history of dental education.
An international search for the next Dean has begun. University President DeRosa has appointed Dr. Phillip Oppenheimer, Dean of the Thomas Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as Chair of the Search Committee.

Trustee Charles Eller was one of some 500 who attended the two-hour funeral for past Loma Linda School of Dentistry Dean Judson Klooster. Loma Linda Chancellor Richard Hart, School of Dentistry Dean Charles Goodacre, and classmate UOP School of Dentistry Dean Art Dugoni spoke at the funeral. Dean Klooster earned his dental degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco in 1947, married Arlene Jean Madsen the next year, while opening a dental practice in San Francisco. He moved his practice to Escondido the year after. He served in Korea as a Navy dentist attached to the First Division of the Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956. Upon his return from overseas, he became a clinical dental educator at Loma Linda University until 1967, when he gave up private practice and teaching to earn a graduate masters degree in biomedical education from Tulane University. From 1968 until his retirement in 1994, he served Loma Linda University as Director of Continuing Education (1968-1972), Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (1969-1971), and Dean (1971-1994). He became Dean-Emeritus in 1994 and was awarded Alumnus of the Year.
Dr. Klooster and his wife Arlene had three daughters and five grandchildren.
One of the highest praises was bestowed by International Trustee Charles Eller in saying, We lost one of the finest gentleman I have ever met.
Trustee Charles Eller notes that their newsletter Perspectives is excellent for keeping in regular contact with their large membership informing them of completely equipping a dental office in a small village far down the Baja California peninsula, donating a set of surgical instruments to the Rescue Task Force for use in a remote Honduran jungle clinic, and actively soliciting used dental equipment for use in indigent areas.

Dr. Clifton O. Dummett, USC Professor-emeritus, received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree during the 2004 Convocation at Meharry Medical College for his exemplary 63-year career in dentistry. He graduated from Northwestern University School of Dentistry in 1941. He then took up a teaching position at Meharry Medical College as Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics (as a pioneer in periodontics), Oral Diagnosis, and Oral Medicine. He became Deputy Director of Dental Education. In 1947, at the age of 28, Dr. Dummett became the Dean of the Meharry School of Dentistry, the youngest dental school dean in the United States. Under his administration, the School of Dentistry was fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education, the first time an Afro-American dental school had achieved such an honor. He resigned in 1949 because of the segregationist policies of the Regional Plan for Education, an organization that Meharry participated in.
In 1962, he sponsored an ADA resolution that effectively eliminated racial discriminatory restrictions from the ADA constituent organizations. In 1965, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, the first African American to serve on that faculty.
He was named 1960 Dentist of the Year by the National Dental Association, served for 22 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the NDA publications, was appointed in 1977 as a member of the Presidents Committee on National health Insurance, elected President of the Los Angeles Dental Society and received the 1982 NCAAPs Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics Award.
