Australasia

PFA Vice-President William Winspear and International Trustee Jonathan Rogers hosted their PFA Breakfast Meeting last March during the Australian National Congress where 110 people including Fellows and neophytes attended to set a Section record. Section Chair Mark Sinclair gave opening remarks, followed by International Trustee for Australasia Jonathan Rogers, who presented Dr. William Winspear with their Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Rogers noted that in addition to Bill’s service as International Trustee, he has also served his Section with great distinction as Secretary/ Treasurer for many years. Vice-President William Winspear then presented Dr. Rogers with a PFA Service Citation for his role as Australasia Section Chair. Following the award presentations 26 new members were inducted into Fellowship with another 16 inducted in absentia.

Canada

International Trustee Barry Dolman of Canada reports having 120 confirmed people for the PFA Montreal Awards & Installation Gala. Anyone still interested needs to quickly contact Dr. Dolman to see if arrangements can be made to accommodate them.

The Canadian Dental Association President Alfred Dean of Nova Scotia, a PFA Fellow, handed his chain of authority to another Fellow Jack Cottrell of Ontario last April at their Annual General Assembly Luncheon and Awards Presentation in Ottawa. Both Drs. Dean and Cottrell will be attending our PFA Gala in Montreal this August.

Also recognized at the Luncheon was the Manitoba Collaborative Project for the Prevention of Early Childhood Tooth Decay by Drs. Robert Schroth, Doug Brothwell, Lisa Kehler, Jeanette Edwards and Members of the Steering Committee.

Fellows David Sage and Jack Stockton received the Canadian Dental Association’s Award of Merit for having served in an outstanding contributions to Canadian dentistry. The CDA Distinguished Service Award that recognizes outstanding service to the dental profession was conferred upon Fellow Keith Titley.

To add to the excitement of the Montreal event, PFA Fellow and past CDA President Burton Conrod is a candidate for the post of FDI President at the FDI World Congress Meetings.

Germany

Chair Frank Braun and past Elmer Best recipient Horst-Wolfgang Haase attended the Third International Congress of Dental Implants last October in the People’s Republic of China to present the 2004 Elmer Best Award to Professor Dr. Zhengang Zhang before an audience of some 400 participants during the opening session. They also discussed the founding of a PFA Section in China. Dr. Zhang’s contributions to dentistry has been continuous, effective, and ongoing for decades.

Guyana (South America)

Dr. Samiran Bera of Georgetown, Guyana, was inducted into Fellowship at our Awards Luncheon last year. He has nominated three more individuals to be considered for Fellowship.

Japan

International Trustee Mamoru Sakuda received the Presidential Award from Japanese Association for Dental Science (JADS) President Tsuyoshi Saito at their JADS Council Meeting in Tokyo. This organization is a federation of 19 scientific and academic societies in dentistry in Japan. This award is presented to dentists who have made great contributions in the development of dentistry and are regarded as the top leaders in their profession. This is a national honor bestowed upon our own PFA Trustee.

Pakistan

Chairman Professor Dr. M. A. Soofi hosted and chaired a joint meeting/seminar with the Fellows of PFA and ICD from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh last February in Lahore, Pakistan. Ms. Qudsia Lodhi, the Provincial Minister for Special Education, was the Guest of Honour. And Dr. Nasim Hassan Shah, the Chief Justice (R) for the Supreme Court of Pakistan was the Chief Guest.

The seminar was attended by senior-most Professor Dr. B. A.Yazdanie, Professor Dr. Waheed Sheikh, and Fellows Professor Tariq Zaman, Muhammad Aslam Ch., Shuja ud Din Qureshi, Jamshed Khilji, Dara J. Harmosji, Talibullah Shah, Nazia Yazdanie, Syed Ikhlaq Ahmed, B. J. Zulqarnain, Javed Ahsraf, Akhtar Bukhari, Umer Farooq Qureshi, Muhammad Arshad, and others.

California, Northern Section

The University of the Pacific Art Dugoni School of Dentistry Dean Art Dugoni, a PFA Fellow, presented their 2005 Medallion of Distinction Award to Tiburon resident Christine Miller during UOP’s 105th annual Alumni Association Meeting in San Francisco. This is the Alumni Association’s highest honor. Christine Miller is the recipient of the PFA Section’s Dental Faculty Recognition Award. She is an Associate Professor of Dental Practice at UOP’s Dugoni School of Dentistry, and has been extensively involved in the advancement of dental programs for persons with disabilities during her quarter of a century tenure there. She founded the Special Needs Clinic at UOP in 1985 and is cofounder of the Pacific Center for Special Care. She has been instrumental is receiving more than $4 million in grants to improve access to dental care for people with special needs. Her access model is called the Northern California Dental Care for Persons with Disabilities Program. She has participated in many other community-based programs and is past President of the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities.

California, Southern Section

International Trustee and Section Chair Charles Eller hosted their Annual PFA Luncheon on 15 May to honor PFA Fellow and immediate past ADA President Eugene Sekiguchi with their Section’s PFA Honor Award. The Section also presented their Teachers of the Year Awards and their Students of the Year Awards at the Coast Anaheim Hotel during the Southern California Annual Scientific Session.

The Doctor of Dentistry, San Diego Edition of April 2005, ran a two-page story on the Pierre Fauchard Academy starting on page three, giving us tremendous coverage about our organization.

Dr. Ted Fortier of Los Angeles received the AGD Humanitarian Award at their Annual Meeting in Anaheim last July.

California, Southern Section continued...

This Award is presented every other year to one of our profession who demonstrates humanitarianism by his personal contribution of voluntary service along with a consistent commitment to enhancing the image of general dentistry and civic involvement and leadership.
Dr. Fortier has been an AGD members since 1965. He graduated from Howard University in 1957, served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and has been an author, teacher, and lecturer in his dental societies. He is involved with the Flying Doctors to provide dental care in Mexico, the Crenshaw YMCA since 1970, currently serving on their Board of Managers, and has twice served as President of the local Kiwanis Club. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Fortier assisted students at USC School of Dentistry with preclinical subjects, lab procedures, and gold castings. He has served on the Southwest Los Angeles Police Dept. Community Police Advisory Board and chairs the local chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen. Dr. Fortier is a PFA Section Director under Chair Charles Eller.

Illinois

Chair Chris Baboulas and Academy Secretary General Richard Kozal attended their annual Luncheon Meeting at the McCormick Place Hyatt Hotel Conference Center during the Chicago Dental Society MidWinter Meeting last February co-hosted with ICD and ACD. ADA President Richard Haught was the main speaker on the state of the ADA.

Maryland

Chair Don Brotman has handed the Section reins over to Dr. Charles Fine and himself has taken on the position as Section Treasurer at their annual meeting last March. International Trustee Richard Walsh also attended their multi-faceted program.

Missouri

Chair James Kulild hosted their annual Meeting last March during the Midwest Dental Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Kulild, UMKC School of Dentistry Professor and Director of Advanced Specialty Endodontics, was the keynote speaker relating his experiences in the U.S.Army NATO Medical Force in Kosoovo, Yugoslavia, after the conclusion of the air war there in 2000.

Nevada

Fellow Raymond D. Rawson, State Senator, County Forensic Coroner, was honored by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry Alumni Association last February with their Distinguished Alumnus Award as “an exemplary Christian leader, respected by colleagues, admired by his profession, community, church, and school; and one who represents the highest ideals of his alma mater.” Dr. Rawson was also speaker on their Scientific Session on the topic of “Forensic Dentistry.”

Senators Raymond D. Rawson, a PFA Fellow, and Joseph Neal, Jr, were honored by the 73rd Session of the Nevada State Legislature with Award presentations at their 9th Senate Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies in the Senate Chambers last March. The honor is well deserved by Dr. Ray Rawson, who serves his community in many different fashions, as well as the Academy.

New York

Fellow Steven Gounardes of Brooklyn, a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry, has been elected Vice President of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) for the coming year. He will become NYSDA President in 2007 of its 13,000 dentist members. Dr. Gounardes is a general practitioner, past President of the Second District Dental Society representing Brooklyn and Staten Island. He has served on the NYSDA Board of Governors, on its Executive Committee, and is an ADA Delegate. He currently is serving a four-year appointment on the Organization Committee of the Greater New York Dental Meeting, which is an annual scientific and trade exhibition held in New York.

Dr. Gounardes is Assistant Director of the Department of Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center in Brooklyn. He is a Fellow in PFA, ICD, ACD, the Hellenic Dental Society, and the Bay Ridge Dental Society.

South Carolina

President-elect Howard Mark attended the PFA Section Meeting last February to present Dr. Gordan Stine, accompanied by his wife Barbara, with the PFA Presidential Award in acknowledgement for his lifetime service to his profession, to his community, and to his State. There were tears in Dr. Stine’s eyes as he accepted the award, saying that it had been a labor of love, enhanced by the support of his great wife and two sons throughout the years. Dr. Mark noted that Dr. Stine was truly an individual to be emulated as an example for others to follow. And it was a great honor to be recognized by PFA in front of his some 30 colleagues at the event.

The Section then installed their officers and new Board of Directors for the coming year. They then honored Dr. Dan Sneed with their 2005 Distinguished Dentist of the Year Award.
