Dental Student Scholarship Program
The major benefactor of the Foundation of the Pierre Fauchard Academy has been the late Fellow, Dr. Brenes Espinach, who in his will, declared that the proceeds of the investment income from his estate shall be used to "promote all aspects of oral Health. "The Foundation Trustees declared that, in accordance with that directive, the promotion of oral health begins with the education of dental practitioners, the men and women responsible for delivering dental health care. The professional education of students is to, not only be superb therapists, but to encourage and develop leadership qualities.
Accordingly, each of the dental schools of the U.S.A. and selected others world wide, are offered a scholarship (currently $1,500) to award to one of their students. The schools are invited at the beginning of the calendar year, to select a student from the junior class, so that he or she will still be in school the following year, using these criteria: He or she will have demonstrated high leadership characteristics. He or she shall have well above average academic qualifications and to also have need for financial support.
Currently there are fifty four U.S.A. schools that qualify. Also 28 non-USA schools are chosen each year in countries that have active Pierre Fauchard Academy Sections. The Sections and their scholarships are selected based upon their respective membership totals. The non-USA Sections must have a membership of at least ten and around 20 to qualify. The determination of which Sections get the scholarships is made by the Foundation Board of Trustees.
This Scholarship Program over the years has been an incredible success with the total awards up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The great benefit has been the extraordinary accomplishments of these young professionals and the fine examples they have set for their peers, in school and beyond.
